Recycling materials is one of the most important things one can do for the environment. That’s exactly the challenge Rural Studio took. Rural studio is an undergraduate program of the School of Architecture at Auburn University that forms a design-build architecture studio aiming to help poor communities of the School’s area. Sponsored by Interface, the world’s largest manufacturer of carpet tiles, they used worn carpet tiles in the construction of a house for a family in Alabama, now known as Lucy/Carpet House.
The house walls contain 72,000 individual stacked tiles held in compression by a heavy wooden ring-beam. The tiles were held in storage for 7 years to ensure they no longer off-gassed. It is a unique project in the studio’s history because it was built with the help of a corporate sponsor; it’s also unique because it turned an otherwise non-recyclable mass of carpet tiles into building material for external walls.

excellent writing about decorating, it is actually useful for me. keep writing and happy blogging.
