Crafts :: DIY window table!

Add comments

As some of you might know, I recently moved to a new appartment. The old one was already furnished, so I was lacking several basic things such as a couch or a table for the living room.

A while back, I salvaged an old window from the garbage and I’ve been meaning to do something with it; so I decided to make a window table! My dad (maybe you remember his skills :P from the bike panniers) came over and we built the window table together. Here’s the whole process!

The materials we needed:

  • An old window
  • 4 table legs (we ordered ours from a carpenter)
  • Wood screws: 4 x 5 cm (2″) for the legs and 32 x 3 cm (1 1/4″)  for the mounting brackets
  • Drill/screwdriver
  • 8 mounting brackets (two for each leg)
  • Moulding Remover
  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Sand Paper
  • Paint
  • Paint brushes
  • Newspaper and paper tape (to cover the glass when painting the table)

the materials you'll need

We prepared the window by sanding the frame; we used my dad’s power sander for the rough spots and did the rest with sand paper. We also sanded the legs so that they better accept the paint. Be aware it’s going to be messy; there was dust everywhere!

Make sure to remove all the dust with a damp cloth to make the rest of the process easier. After that, we used wood putty to fill the holes and cracks so that the surface is as smooth as possible. When the wood putty dried, we turned the frame over (so that it was face down) to mount the legs.

Time to drill holes! We carefully measured where we wanted the holes for the mounting brackets and drilled them before putting the screws in. We placed two screws on each side of each bracket; eight total for every table leg. Make sure that the leg is properly aligned every time (it’s easier with two people, one holding the leg in place and the other one drilling). As you can see, we also drilled one deep hole at every corner of the frame (and after we inserted the 5 cm screw, we covered the hole with wood putty!). That way, for each leg, there is one screw that gets through the frame and holds it in place.

We made sure the legs were stable and turned the table upside down. Tadah! We have a table!

Before starting to paint the table, we covered the glass with newspaper and paper tape to avoid getting paint on it. In order to completely repaint the window frame and the legs, we had to paint many coats, allowing to dry each time (that was pretty difficult since I couldn’t wait to see it finished!).

And here’s the final result: an upcycled window table! :)
