Tech Bytes :: A (mobile) bit of green

We are proud to announce that we’re running on mobile! :P
Since Alex got a smartphone, it bugged us seeing how weird our site appeared on a mobile screen: the layout was all messed up! With a little research we found Mobify, a mobile web platform. Mobify has a kind of studio in which one can make websites mobile-friendly on any device and then launch them, using a custom domain. Of course, you need to sign up for an account and the mobile version of the page is hosted at mobify.me, but at least it’s free!

We tried to keep it simple, so we redesigned the layout, using only the main buttons for our categories. Mobify’s studio has an impressive editor where you can click on the objects of the main page you would like to keep; the stylesheet’s CSS is then automatically generated at the editor.

Although it was pretty easy to use, the automated result was messy: thankfully, Mobify supports html as well, so we created new div objects and fixed our page. When we launched it, we added a bit of code in our header so that it recognises when a user is connected through a phone or a computer: in the first case, it redirects to the mobile page, http://m.bit-of-green.com. This page is actually mobify’s page masked, but we couldn’t transfer our data elsewhere. Overall, it was fun using the editor and seeing bit of green properly on a phone screen!

It’s great to see more user sites catering for mobiles. Smart phones are a fantastic way to keep track of things coming and going on the internet, but sometimes the websites are almost unreadable.

Glad to see you guys have done your bit :)

      Haha, nice pun! :)
I agree about smartphones, surfing the internet is easier than ever!

It’s interesting how the smaller screen size and the need for fast loading of the page lead to a whole different concept in web design. No more flashy java script-filled webpages, hurray for simplicity!
